Why LED

For most lighting applications, more and more Halogen bulbs are being switched over to LED, this is also true with outdoor lighting.  LED Lights are up to 80% more efficient compared to halogens.  LED’s give off very little heat, a traditional light bulb is 95% heat and only 5% light, where as a LED gives off 95% light and only 5% heat.  LEDs can also last 25 times longer than Incandescent lights.

How LED’s are Different 

  • Light Source: LEDs are the size of a fleck of pepper, and a mix of red, green, and blue LEDs is typically used to make white light.
  • Direction: LEDs emit light in a specific direction, reducing the need for reflectors and diffusers that can trap light. This feature makes LEDs more efficient for many uses such as recessed downlights and task lighting. With other types of lighting, the light must be reflected to the desired direction and more than half of the light may never leave the fixture.
  • Heat: LEDs emit very little heat. In comparison, incandescent bulbs release 90% of their energy as heat and CFLs release about 80% of their energy as heat.

Pros and Cons of LEDs

LEDs do not burn out like other bulbs do. Instead, they fade over time, and when the light has decreased by 30 percent it’s no longer considered useful. (Manufacturers’ claimed life is a prediction of when the 30 percent decrease will happen.)

LED Advantages 

  • Use about 80 percent less electricity while providing the same brightness of the incandescents they replace.
  • Use slightly less energy than CFLs.
  • Brighten instantly.
  • Lifespan not shorted by turning them on and off frequently.
  • Some dim as low as incandescents do.
  • Most claimed to last 20,000 to 50,000 hours when used three hours a day (about 18 to 46 years).

LED Disadvantages

  • Typically cost more than other bulbs.
  • Not all A-type bulbs (the kind used in lamps and other general-lighting fixtures) are good at casting light in all directions.
  • Most are good but not great at accurately displaying the colors of objects and skin tones.
  • Some are bigger or heavier than other bulb types

 

Retrofit LED

Most accent lights in your garden will use MR16 bulbs.  If you have an existing system you can change out your halogen bulbs for LED bulbs with little effort.

Kelvin Temperatures 

Kelvin Temperatures Determine what colour your lights are.  Traditionally in Landscape lighting we use either 2700K or 3000K.  The majority of our jobs are done in 2700K which gives your property a warm, Inviting look.  3000K is used more on concrete houses when you are looking for a Vibrant, Modern look.

Integrated LED

New fixtures can come with Integrated LED bulbs.  The Integrated fixtures we use come with a 15 year warranty and are expected to last for 50,000 hours.  These fixtures are completely water tight, and much more durable than the retrofit fixtures, but they also cost more.
